"Teamwork is the most important pillar for the project: collaboration, accountability, trust and communication translates into the achievement of goals and results"
Braulio arana
The Lacramarca River Riparian Defenses Project (Package R-7) is being carried out under a fast-track collaborative contract, which allows the design of the project and the execution of the work simultaneously. Braulio Arana, OHLA’s Environmental Coordinator for this project, talks to us about all of this.
1. What does it mean for you to work in an environment catalogued as one of the richest in the world in terms of ecological diversity?
Since Peru is a biodiverse country, it is our responsibility as Peruvians to conserve this environment, and working in it implies, for me, a privilege as well as an enthusiasm to achieve the objectives of the project as a team, guaranteeing the ecosystemic balance of the Villa María wetland.
2. What exactly does your work consist of?
I lead a team in which we are in charge of ensuring compliance with the environmental commitments assumed in Peru’s environmental certification and the commitments established by OHLA, maximizing the benefits for biodiversity.
3. What challenges have you faced in the development of the project in which you are participating and what have been the environmental achievements?
During the construction process we encountered new challenges such as the interaction we had with the extraordinary weather phenomena in the project area, in which we had to strengthen the environmental management measures for the prevention, control, mitigation and adaptation to the environmental impacts on the ecosystem and environment of the project.
4. Please tell us about one of those particular achievements that makes you especially proud.
The most significant achievement for my team was the approval of the Second Modification of the IGAPRO (Environmental Certification).
For the Second Modification of the IGAPRO, the scope included the works designed within the Villa María-Chimbote wetland, for which we had the intervention and evaluation of SERFOR as the regulatory entity of this fragile ecosystem. After reformulations of the prevention, control and mitigation measures established for the protection of the Villa María-Chimbote wetland, the project became viable for development within this fragile ecosystem.
5. What do you think the role of companies such as OHLA should be in favor of biodiversity protection?
OHLA’s role in favor of biodiversity protection has already taken on an indisputable role in the city of Chimbote, since there is no precedent of a project with these characteristics that has been developed in a fragile ecosystem such as the Villa María wetland, with all the implications that this entails.
For this reason, together with the community relations area, we are working hand in hand with local entities, NGOs and leaders to protect the Villa María wetland.
6. Have you always worked at OHLA on projects with a strong environmental component?
I was part of the Concessions team during the years 2015-2018. However, this is the first time that I am part of OHLA in a project that involves the development of a project within a fragile ecosystem such as the Villa María – Chimbote wetland.
7. What professional aspirations do you have in the company and what value do you place on teamwork?
I have great aspirations within the organization, not only developing projects in Peru, but also in other countries where OHLA has important projects.
Teamwork is undoubtedly the most important pillar for the project is the way in which collaboration, responsibility, trust and communication translates into the achievement of objectives and results.
